The eerie, lit corridors of the ancient Roman cisterns underground

They say Naples is a lasagna—layer upon layer of history. To see the bottom layer, you have to go down. Napoli Sotterranea (Naples Underground) is a labyrinth of tunnels, aqueducts, and cisterns that lies 40 meters below the chaotic streets.

Getting There with the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus

The official entrance to the main Napoli Sotterranea route is in the heart of the historic center.

  • Bus Stop: Line A (Red Line), Stop Piazza Dante or Piazza del Gesù.
  • Walking: From Piazza San Gaetano (where the entrance is), it's a 10-minute walk through the vibrant Spaccanapoli street from the bus stop.

What You'll See

The tour is a journey through time:

  1. Greek-Roman Aqueducts: Huge caverns dug by the Greeks to extract tufa stone to build the city, later converted by the Romans into cisterns to store water.
  2. WWII Air Raid Shelters: During the bombings of 1943, thousands of Neapolitans lived down here. You'll see toys, furniture, and graffiti left behind.
  3. The Hypogeum Gardens: A scientific experiment growing basil and other plants in the humidity of the underground, powered by special UV lights.
  4. The Roman Theatre: You actually enter this part through a trapdoor in a private apartment! This is where Emperor Nero once performed.

Ancient Cistern

Is it Claustrophobic?

Most of the spaces are huge (cathedral-sized cisterns). However, there is one optional section—the "candlelight tour"—where the passage is very narrow. You can skip this narrow part and wait for the group at the other end if you're uncomfortable.

Ticket Combos

Many City Sightseeing vendors offer a Bus + Underground combo ticket. This not only saves money but often lets you skip the ticket line at the entrance, which can get very long in peak season.

Why it's a Must-Do

Naples is intense. The silence of the underground provides a stark, surreal contrast to the noise above. It explains how the city survived for millennia.

Wear comfortable shoes! There are roughly 130 steps down (and back up). It's a cool 15°C (59°F) year-round, so bring a light jacket even in summer.
