You can't come to Naples and not see Pompeii. The city buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD is one of the most moving and impressive sights on Earth. While you can take the Circumvesuviana train (which is often crowded, hot, and plagued by pickpockets), there is a much more comfortable way.

The City Sightseeing Shuttle

City Sightseeing operates a dedicated bus service connecting Naples directly to the Pompeii Archaeological Park.

  • Departure Point: Largo Castello (near Stop #1 of the HoHo bus).
  • Comfort: Air-conditioned, reserved seats, no standing.
  • Commentary: Audio guide included on the bus ride to prep you for the history.

Why take the shuttle?

  1. Security: No risk of pickpockets unlike the commuter train.
  2. Simplicity: No switching lines or navigating confusing stations.
  3. Combos: You can buy a ticket that includes the ride + skip-the-line entry to Pompeii.

Highlights of Pompeii

Once you arrive, what should you focus on? The site is massive.

  • The Forum: The center of political and religious life with Vesuvius looming behind the Temple of Jupiter.
  • The Lupanar: The ancient brothel, famous for its erotic frescoes (and usually the longest line!).
  • The Garden of the Fugitives: Where plaster casts of the victims are displayed—a heartbreaking reminder of the human cost.
  • The House of the Vettii: Recently reopened and stunningly preserved commercial house.
  • The Amphitheatre: The oldest surviving Roman amphitheatre in the world.

Planning Your Day

Option A: The Half-Day Express

  • 10:00 AM: Shuttle to Pompeii.
  • 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM: Explore the ruins.
  • 2:30 PM: Shuttle back to Naples.
  • 3:30 PM: Hop on the Line B bus for a relaxing sunset drive along the coast.

Option B: The Vesuvius Add-on Some shuttle tickets allow a connection to Mt. Vesuvius. You do Pompeii in the morning, take a bus up the volcano, and return in the evening.

Warning: Food inside Pompeii is limited to a cafeteria. Bring water and snacks, or eat at one of the tourist restaurants near the entrance before going in.
